Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes is a game I am a massive fan of, so much so that I have multiple versions of it and even the arcade 1up machine in my game room! This is the first game in this series, but the third in the vs series from Capcom overall.
I think that this was when they really went all in with the whole vs thing. I wanted to share my thoughts on the game as well as see if it still holds up to this day….
Spoiler alert it does! Before Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes is that you pick a team of two heroes and then fight a series of opponents, it is the same style as the other Capcom fighting games. As well as your two fighters, you can pick a sidekick that you can call in to help. Switching between characters is a huge part of the strategy and you can also do team up attacks as well. The action is fast and furious and just a whole lot of fun.
Speaking of fun one of the things that I have always felt that Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes did really well was make it accessible. You have the same style of controls as the Street Fighter series, but you can also pull off special moves much more easily, but the standard button configurations still work as well. It makes this a game that anyone can pick up and play, but there is also a level of depth here too for those that want to master it.
I think that with this one more so than Marvel vs. Capcom 2 , Capcom made it more accessible for those that are not usually into fighting games. A prime example of this is my wife, on the Arcade 1Up Marvel Vs. The main version of Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes is the Dreamcast version and the main game mode here and in the other versions is Arcades mode where you are fighting your way to Onslaught.
If you beat him, you get your character specific ending, something that was missing from Marvel vs Capcom 2! You also have a VS mode a training mode and a fun survival mode too. I adore Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes and even to this day, it is a game I will play often. While I love the arcade version that is one the Arcade 1Up and this is the version that has also been made available on consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation 3, I think that the Dreamcast still has the best version of this game!
There is also a port for the PlayStation which is fun, but due to the console limitations, it is not as good. While the second game may get all the attention, Marvel vs Capcom Clash of Superheroes is a fantastic fighting game and a game I spent many hours with on the Sega Dreamcast back in the day. Hell, if you really want to get into it, you could even throw in X-Men Children of the Atom and Marvel Superheroes into the mix as well, but they were not team fighters.
It was the Capcom side that was most interesting this time around. However, other Capcom franchises were used as well. Before each fight, you are assigned a random assist character that will help you out. This roster is also stacked with a great selection of Marvel and Capcom favorites. Marvel vs Capcom Clash of Superheroes does not play like your typical Street Fighter game that is for sure.
This is much flashier and dare I say, easier to get into. You can button mash your way through this game and have a fun time doing so. However, there is a deep level of skill here too. Much of the skill if you ask me revolves around being able to land massive air combos.
These are where you launch your opponent in the air and dish out some heavy-duty damage. As you have two characters, you can also do team attacks and these are amazing. It is crazy to think we were all flipping out over the super moves in Super Street Fighter II Turbo just a few years before this. You can switch between characters as you fight, so you have one getting a bit of health back as they rest. Each character has their own ending so you will probably want to beat the game with them all.
The end boss is Onslaught and he is pretty awesome. He is also tough as nails so you better bring your A-game when you face him! You can also play vs mode, but the home ports on the Dreamcast and even the PlayStation do have other modes for you to enjoy. I know that most people completely overlook Marvel vs Capcom Clash of Superheroes these days as its sequel blows it away in pretty much every regard. However, if you want a vs game that is a tad more scaled back, give this one a try.
